RIGHT HEART STUDY

This is a diagnostic test that measures pressures and blood flow through the heart to diagnose certain heart conditions like Pulmonary Hypertension

What is Right Heart Study?

Right heart study, also known as right heart catheterization, is a diagnostic test that measures pressures and blood flow through the heart to diagnose heart conditions. The procedure involves inserting a catheter through a vein in the neck or groin and guiding it to the heart. The catheter is then used to measure the pressure in the right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, and left ventricle. The blood flow is measured by injecting a small amount of dye into the catheter and taking X-ray images.

Indications

The indications for right heart study include heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and other conditions that affect the function of the heart. The test is also used to evaluate the effects of certain medications on the heart.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and it takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through a vein in the neck or groin and guided to the heart. X-ray images are used to guide the catheter to the correct position. The catheter is then used to measure the pressure in the right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, and left ventricle. The blood flow is measured by injecting a small amount of dye into the catheter and taking X-ray images.
After the procedure, patients are usually monitored in the hospital for a few hours to make sure there are no complications. Most patients can go home the same day. If the test shows any abnormalities, the patient may need further evaluation or treatment.

Overview

Right heart study is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of heart conditions. It provides important information about the pressures and blood flow through the heart that can help guide treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes. The procedure is generally safe, but like any medical procedure, it does carry some risks, such as bleeding, infection, and damage to the artery. However, these risks are generally low and outweighed by the benefits of the procedure in most cases.
